DISTRICT 5 CANDIDATES

Carlos E. Alvarez UNKNOWN
pegaditos1140@univision.com

1. Retired broadcaster, journalist and school teacher
2. First run for public office

3. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: Crowds don’t bother career broadcaster and District 5 candidate Carlos E. Alvarez, who is making his first run for elected office. “I’m a broadcaster. I’m a communicator. I’m not going to be scared because I’m going to meet people. I’m curious to find out how people are going to treat me,” Alvarez said.
4. N-P Forum Comments: Here are my definite choices for discard - District 5, Alvarez

Rana M. Erbrick UNKNOWN
www.rana4council.com
rana4council@gmail.com

1. King’s BFF
2. I also believe that Ms. Erbrick is a RAG
3. Socialized with Rana Erbrick a couple of times and her politics are definitely in line with the RAGs
4. Reliable source shared with me that Ebrick is the neighbor of Mr. King
5. Rana Erbrick, friend of King
6. Mrs. Erbrick last week acknowledged that she had been a neighbor of the Kings
7. Advised multiple times she fully believed Schwing should have been selected as City Manager
8. Honest in her appraisal of the current council, and certain supporters of the majority (with whom she has little confidence)
9. I just did not get the sense that the concerns expressed [about Erbrick] have strong merit
10. Erbrick still seems a might "chummy" towards King, but one could mark that up as a sign of a civil nature. . . maybe. My question, " Will you support termination of King as CM, if elected?"
11. There is a kick-off Meet & Greet for Erbrick set for Anthony's on the Blvd (Note: Known RAG hangout)
12. Finance Advisory Committee member and City Hall volunteer.
13. BTW, wonder why Erbrick was seen hanging with King. Probably planning her Anthony's BBQ!
14. From N-P: “Rana Erbrick, a member of the city's Financial Advisory Committee and a District 5 council candidate, encouraged the council to set the tax rate at $8.22. That could bring in an additional $2 million, she said. The FAC, however, voted 4-3 Monday against recommending that rate.”
15. "I was quoted in the News-Press on July 19 as favoring a higher tax millage rate for Cape Coral of $8.22. I want to make it clear that I am not in favor a tax increase, but only want the City Council keep this option available as they move through the budget process."
16.  From the July 18 Council Workshop tape, starting at 3:43:16, during Citizens’ Input:  “I’m here tonight to encourage you to set the rollback rate at the 8.2208 . . . let’s start off with the 8.2208; I’m suggesting and encouraging you to start tonight at the 8.2208.”
17. First run for elected office, deputy supervisor Harrison Township, MI township supervisor
18. Cape Coral Financial Advisory Committee, past president New Residents Club, Citizens Academy, Community Emergency Response Team, Police Volunteer Unit
19. Erbrick said she was compelled to run, in large part, because of the way city council members treat each other and the public. With “no voice of reason” on the dais, she said, there’s little chance of moving the city forward in any positive way.
20. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum:  “Our Economic Development Office does a great job for the number of people in it,” said Rana Erbrick of District 5. Find out more about what the office needs, Erbrick said. The city might find opportunities in universities or a teaching hospital and with incentives.
21. N-P Forum Comments: Erbrick reminded us how she was one of two females running, I just love being informed of the obvious.
22. Rosko Review:  Basically, anything she can do to improve the city, but no commitment on anything specific. Rana Erbrick stated raise the millage to the roll back rate.  [Her] rationale was that you would not pay more in taxes.

13. N-P Forum Comments: Candidate Richard Leon...homegrown Cape Coral citizen, very good grasp on all issues...looking forward to see Cape Coral blossom again for the future. No "on-the-fence" answers to his questions either. Many of the elders in attendance nodding in approval of his platform. IMHO very good choice.
14. N-P Forum Comments: Leon was a breath of fresh air for the citizens.
15. Rosko Review:  Stand with the businesses on front line. UEP must start up and move forward. Give tax breaks to businesses.

12. N-P Forum Comments: Let's take a look at District 5 .....Scott Morris was very well spoken, personable, community involved, many eyes and ears were drawn to attention when he spoke of his position on the questions and issues. No "wishy-washy" answers, direct and to the point..IMHO excellent choice, no BS! Active community involvement and integrity. Great connection and smiles from very large percentage of audience.
13. N-P Forum Comments: Conclusion of the night IMHO... Scott Morris in the lead; Richard Leon a close second; to all other candidates, Run a clean campaign and good luck!!

DISTRICT 2 CANDIDATES

Peter Brandt  INCUMBENT RAG
www.petebrandtforcapecoral.com
petebrandt@petebrandtforcapecoral. com
1. Can I just add Brant is old, very, very old to hold office (July 19 is Brandt’s 80th birthday! Happy Birthday!)
2.
Cape Coral City Councilman Pete Brandt says he did nothing wrong when he asked the customer service office to lower a utilities bill for a businessman whose services he uses.
3. This
proves that Brandit (nice pun!) is too vague on the city issues and needs to find another line of work!
4.
Brandt made the call, right? How is someone "out to get him" when he does it to himself?
5. Brandt tried to instruct a city employee to change the rules as a favor for someone that provides a service to him.

6. No doubt Brandt was aware he wasn’t suppose to approach staff directly.
7. I'll bet if I look up 'unmitigated audacity', I'd find Councilman Brandt's picture! Can't wait until elections! Pack your bags, Pete. You're done.
8. Don't you just like the logic our Fab 5 man comes up with? Just stick a hose in a 5 gallon jug and see how long it takes to fill, then...
9. Brandt said he felt his conversation was illegally recorded, but had no plans to pursue the matter.
10. W
hen Brandt . . . claim[s] [he] only just discovered the lines were recorded I find that hard to believe, especially because Brandt called from his office which it is common knowledge is recorded. 11. Cape Coral Councilman Pete Brandt violated the city charter when he tried to help a person he does business with get a break on a city sewer bill.
12. Brandt is good at "rocket surgery"..... (and “brain science”)
13. Can you list his accomplishments...other than "having someone look into that!"

14. Whether it is one, or many, issues for this council person that should be vetted, this one suggests an ethical issue has been created by the council person.
15. I rather doubt Councilman Brandt’s phone call will be the deciding factor in whether he is reelected or not.

16. You’re right for once, Brandt is small potatoes and he will fry this next election.
17. I think Mr. Brandt’s overall record/accomplishments of his four years in office will be what will determine whether or not he is reelected, not a phone call inquiry.

18. The voters will determine whether Mr. Brandt will retain his seat but I would bet their decision on how to vote will not be based on his right/wrong decision in making this particular phone call.
19. Outside of this being a stupid action taken on the part of an elected official who should fully understand the scrutiny everyone on council [is under] . . .
20. I find it highly conflicting that this official would go out of his way in his attempts to provide financial relief from the rest of the ratepayers for someone with whom he does personal business.
21. That’s right. Brandt broke the law and he knew what he was doing when he made the call. He was caught red-handed with his hand in the cookie jar. Will the council take this matter up? My money is on this will be swept under the carpet with the other dirt.

22. "I'm going to support the proposed tentative rate so it's not going to go up at all," Councilman Pete Brandt said Friday. He hopes the council can lower the rate.
23. Mr. Brandt I don’t care what you say. YOU called and asked for your friend’s water bill to be reduced AND YOU SAID YOUR NAME!!!!! Let’s show a little common sense please.

24. Retired aerospace engineer/program manager
25. Completing first term as a councilman. Served on committee to incorporate the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
26. Community activities: Cape Coral Power Squadron, VFW, Business people United for Political Action, Southwest Cape Coral Homeowners Association, Southwest Florida Sportsman’?s Association, Elks, The Paradise Pirates boat club, the R/Sea Hawks and the German American Social Club
27. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum:  Meanwhile, District 2 incumbent and Councilmember Pete Brandt said he was capable of more than "one dimensional thinking" and that restarting the UEP will cost the city more now than not to restart it.

28. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: “It could cost us a lot more if we went forward with it right now,” said District 2 incumbent Pete Brandt. It’s one-dimensional thinking to say start it up because it’s a complex issue, said Brandt. A plan is needed and the council is working on that, Brandt said.
29. N-P Forum Comments: Brandt appeared to be off his meds.
30. N-P Forum Comments: District 2 incumbent and Councilmember Pete Brandt said he was capable of more than "one dimensional thinking" and that restarting the UEP will cost the city more now than not to restart it.  I wonder when he thinks it should be restarted.
31. N-P Forum Comments:  From the now famous “someone ought to look into that”, Brandt sometimes seems lost up on the dais. Behind the scenes he played a very active role in ensuring Kuehn and Gary king were appointed. He wanted to change the rules to qualify his friend Tom Leipold for the city manager position. He seems to be a behind the scenes kind of concilperson.
32. N-P Forum Comments: Deile and Brandt lied to the VOTERS when they promised us they would have a useable Methodology for the UEP in 2008.
33. Brandt said at the forum the other night that he was " a tea partier before there was a tea party".
34. Councilman Pete Brandt gave King a 3.23 rating. He highlighted King’s fiscal management, initiative and creativity and his planning and organizational abilities as his best areas of performance.
35. Rosko Review:  None.

John M. Carioscia NON RAG http://www.facebook.com/ElectJohnCarioscia
ElectJohn@comcast.net
1. What has Carioscia done? What exactly does he stand for? I haven't seen him stand up for anything or take a position on anything.
2.
Retired Chicago police lieutenant
3. First run for political office
4. Community activities: Cape Coral Citizens Academy Ambassador Program, Cape Coral Civic Association, Cape Coral Sons of Italy, Cape Coral Police Association, plays in blues band, softball, fishing, golf
5. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: John Carioscia and John Miehle, also District 2 candidates, also called for the program to restart.
6. N-P Forum Comments: District 2 – First “get to know” talk – only two interesting candidates in my view – John Carioscia and John Miehle
7. Rosko Review:  Double the staff in the economic development office. Bring a university to Cape Coral. (Interestingly, we have tried that but due to the economy were unsuccessful).

Joseph Coviello UNKNOWN
covielloforthecape@gmail.com
http://www.facebook.com/joecovielloforcapecouncil
1. Business consultant, specializes in insurance, payroll, benefits
2. Mr. Coviello shared with me that he is NOT a RAG.
3.
Coviello supports/does not support the city manager depending on whether he is talking to someone who supports/does not support the city manager.
4. Coviello, 56, enters that race, with an eye toward economic development and job creation as part of his campaign platform. “I want to make it easier for new businesses to come to Cape Coral. The city needs economic development,” he said. As a self-described local business leader, Coviello said that the pulse among the local business community is that the city’s procedures by which new businesses have to follow is too complex. He wants to change that, he said.
5. Coviello also serves as the admissions field representative and liaison to Congressman Connie Mack’s office to the Federal Academy.
6. First run for elected office
7. Community activities:  President U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Florida Parents Association, admissions, field representative for Merchant Marine Academy, Cape Coral Construction Industry Association
8. Coral Association of Realtors Forum: “I am in favor of creating an infrastructure for the future. Cape Coral will grow again.” said Joe Coviello, a District 2 candidate.

9. Rosko Review:  Pour more resources into the building department. (Why? There is no real building going on.)

Dan Sheppard RAG
cathys@sheppardlandscape.com
1. Owner Sheppard Landscape Inc.; former owner Architectural Millwork Company
2. Education: High school diploma, vocational school for drafting, carpentry

3. First run for public office
4. Median and other beautification projects throughout city, "Christmas in Pine Island" (charity benefit) after Hurricane Charley, helped change Royal Palm tree ordinance, fought for KC's River Stop lease renewal, participates in Community Redevelopment Agency projects

5.  N-P Forum Comments: The worst IMO was Dan Sheppard.
6. N-P Forum Comments: Here are my definite choices for discard - District 2, Sheppard
7. Rosko Review:  Plan fr the future with undergrounding of electric lines.  He's looking long term and wants to see a change. Do not renew LCEC's contract.
Sheppard’s history of commercial vehicle parking violations:
*2000 – Guilty finding by Special Magistrate
*2002 – Two warning notices issued
*2003 – One notice of violation issued
*2004 – One warning ticket issued

DISTRICT 3 CANDIDATES

William Deile INCUMBENT RAG
bdeile@capecoral.net
1. Trying to find a way to keep candidate L. Nesta from running for council.
2. Note to Deile: The Charter clearly states that an employee may not "HOLD OFFICE"; it doesn't say an employee can't RUN for office.
3. He really thought he would walk into the seat with anyone running against him. Wrong again Deile.
4. The info that I received (from a reliable source) said that Deile is trying to find a way to have him (Nesta) disqualified.
5. Let’s hold him to this: Councilman Bill Deile said[,] “Once we set a tax rate it can’t go higher . . . we can always adjust it downward.”
6. And another good one from The Breeze on the phone taping mess:
"They're flirting with felonies," Deile said. "It's appalling that at this level the disaffected would stoop to felonious behavior to attack Brandt."
7.
Don’t put it past Deile and company to lower the tax rate slightly (relying on the reserve to cover any shortfall) and boast to the public that the RAG lowered taxes. A typical election year move.
8. Deile is throwing up smoke screens, about the missing fuel to cover up what he's really trying to do, which is cut City government to Ground Zero, starting Monday, at Council, with his proposed elimination of HR.
9. The personal attacks, snarky remarks and bad jokes from the dais are not very becoming.
10. He is up for re-election . . . make him explain himself and his past actions to the people that are his BOSS, the citizens of Cape Coral.
11. Deile also believes a felony could have occurred when Pete Brandt was unknowingly recorded while speaking with a city billing representative on behalf of a citizen.
12. He [Deile] said he doesn't know of plans to outsource any of the functions of HR either, and that for now Bateman has responded well to the additional duties.
13. He “doesn’t care what the citizens think.”
14. Mr Deile you are walking on thin ice with the way you are speaking on the dias. The tape was not obtained illegally unless you are the one poor person in the entire world that thinks that EVERYTHING at city hall isn’t recorded.
15. July 18 Spotlight poll: 11 percent
16. The audit exposed some shortcoming, which is good, but Deile is just trying to justify Towler's hack report!
17. Me thinks he almost made the BIG BLASPHEMOUS BOO-BOO referring to Jesus Christ possibly being homosexual! SHAME SHAME
18. From N-P: “The fuel audit will get a lot of attention, said Councilman Bill Deile. He wants to point out and ask why the audit didn't address some situations that could have allowed theft, Deile said. The city has since installed safeguards to prevent those situations, he said.”
19. From Breeze: “Meanwhile, Councilmember Bill Diele wondered if the fuel audit - conducted by Lee County auditors - was even accurate because the city had no way of knowing how much fuel it did receive during the period studied by Towler, and the county auditors. No bills of lading were received and it was unclear how much fuel the city did receive. Towler even went as far as to follow a tanker truck to Tampa during his investigation. Deile said there was never a clear idea of how much fuel the city received during the period studied by Towler, and later, county auditors. ‘If we have no faith in the number for fuel in how can we reach a conclusion the missing fuel can be in any quantity. It could be one gallon or a million gallons,’ he said.”
20. Why is our Chamber of Commerce giving a breakfast for an incumbent that has caused hate, discontent, lack of vision to move our city forward, borderlines ethical behavior, disrespectful to citizens at public input and to those applying for simple committees, broken promise of finding a methodology for the UE, instead placed the burden directly on the ratepayers back, had a lawsuit against the city, but dropped it once he realized he was going to have to pay out of his pocket, anointed his best friend, Gary King as city manager, even wrote the contract for him. Cutting core services that attracts the tourists to want to live here. Compares citizens to the hated Al Quad terrorists because they have a different opinion than his. Expressed to the media that it had been a mistake sitting on the council dais and would rather serve a term in Iraq than sit on the dais again. The only mistake VOTE sees is if the Chamber continues to support someone that has total lack of respect for our city. Is this the road our chamber wants to travel down? A direction of total destruction. if so, what a sad morning our city will be starting in its history?
21. Current job: Retired attorney; retired colonel (1999), taught political science at Edison College.
22. Political experience: Completing first term as a councilman
23. Community activities: Cape Coral Art League, Military Officers Association of America, Cape Coral Audit Review Committee, Cape Coral Charter School Governing Board, Cape Dispute Resolution Committee, work as a Lee County poll worker, disaster relief worker for SBA/FEMA after Hurricane Charley, Lee County School Board Pride and Patriotism Committee
24. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: “The timing for it [UEP] has to be correct,” said District 3 incumbent Bill Deile.  Otherwise, the property owners could end up walking away from land that is valued far below the assessments applied to pay for the new lines, Deile said.
25. N-P Forum Comments: Of the incumbents Deile was his arrogant obnoxious self last night
26. N-P Forum Comments: Would love to hear Deile squirm through explaining why he tried so many times to get Dave Montrose reprimanded.
27. N-P Forum Comments: I think many had high expectations for Deile. In the end he has misused his power time and again. From trying the get his lawsuit resolved by the city manager (a violation of state statutes), to pleading his case from the dais, to trying to shut down Civic’s use of the Yacht Club, to trying to get Dave Montrose fired, Deile has done everything but look out for the well being of the city.
28. N-P Forum Comments: Deile and Brandt lied to the VOTERS when they promised us, they would have a useable Methodology for the UEP in 2008.
29. Quote from Deile:  "One thing Mrs. LePera is absolutely correct about is her statement, ‘I do believe that Mr. Deile will offer something toward improving the UEP ...’  I have already begun this process and I will continue to work to obtain the type of program our residents need and deserve. Given where we are now it will not be easy or quick, but it must and will be done."
30. Deile reminds me of the paranoid Captain Quegg, from the Caine Mutiny! There are those who believe he came in with the best of intentions, but I knew him before; he is an arrogant, egotistical,  megalomaniac!
31. King’s best overall review so far is 3.4 from Councilman Bill Deile. Deile gave King a four on seven of the 13 areas councilmen are rating the manager. Deile wrote on his review that King should do more to promote his positive accomplishments and be tougher on employees for nonperformance.
32.  Rosko Review:  Interestingly, none.

Alan Sheppard NON RAG
nyshepfla@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Elect-Alan-Sheppard/180829671981769?ref=nf
1. Al Sheppard has no ties with any groups, except those in Sandoval that convinced him to run
2. For strong public safety effort, a true focus on economic development supportive of the community, for the multiple generations that reside in the Cape
3
. July 18 Spotlight poll: 17 percent
4. First run for elected office
5. Enjoys, nature dogs, sports, fishing

6. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: Assessments could be spread over a longer term with a lower interest to ease the burden on property owners, said District 3 candidate Alan Sheppard. “Wells and septic tanks were never meant to be a permanent solution."
7. N-P Forum Comments: A. Sheppard spoke very well.
8. Rosko Review:  Wants to increase the sales tax, create other revenues besides millage. He stated that the CRA is a hodgepodge but expressed he had no knowledge of the issue. He also stated, "If it's good knowledge we go ahead with it." There are other ways of raising revenue besides millage and assessments, pay as you go fee and increase the sales tax.  Alan Sheppard stated the city we (sic) should buy the golf course.

Leonard Nesta Jr. NON RAG
lnestajr@live.com
1. Cape Coral firefighter
2. I know Lenny N. IMHO, he's a good man and would do his best to fulfill the office if elected.
3. Mr. Nesta has been here a lot longer than he [Deile] has. I too know him on a professional basis. Good man.
4. The Charter clearly states that an employee may not "HOLD OFFICE"; it doesn't say an employee can't RUN for office.
5.
I know that Nesta got a green light from the city attorney and the city clerk office, but Deile doesn't agree with them.
6. I’ve heard Nesta plans to retire before the new council members would take their seats, so the whole issue is a non-issue.

7. July 18 Spotlight poll: 56 percent
8. Education: Florida State Fire College, National Fire Academy, certified public pension trustee
9. First run for elected office
10. Member Grace United Methodist Church, firefighter pension fund trustee, member NCPERS, member Florida Public Pension Trustees Association
11. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: “I am a little nervous, but I have a strong backbone. I’m going over budget and city issues,” said District 3 candidate Lenny Nesta Jr. “It’s a new adventure for me. My goal is to get my face out into the public so they get to know me as a person.”
12. Cape Coral Association of Realtors Forum: Water bills will go up if the program isn’t restarted, said District 3 candidate Lenny Nesta.
13. N-P Forum Comments:  Nesta only decided to run the week prior to the forum so he really hasn't had much time to research and familiarize himself with all the issues. I agree, he seems very genuine, loves this city, and is not a "politician".
14. N-P Forum Comments: I was impressed with Nesta, seems genuine but a little nervous, IMO I think he will get better speaking as more forums come up.
15. Rosko Review:  CRA is a great organization and the council should stand behind it.  He stated that he would work diligently hard (gotta love that Lynn - "diligently hard") for the residents, formulate a plan to grow the city. The UEP will bring people into the city.  Lenny Nesta stated the city we (sic) should buy the golf course.
